Here’s a general list of documents you may need to file your taxes:  

 Personal Information  

– Name, Date of Birth (DOB) Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for yourself, spouse, and dependents. Some of the things for example would be birth certificate, ID, passport, SS card etc.  

– Previous year’s tax return if you’ve filed.

– Bank account information (for direct deposit of refunds) Account and routing number. 

 Income Documents  

W-2 Forms – If you are employed  

1099 Forms – For other income sources such as:  

  – 1099-NEC (self-employment income)  

  – 1099-MISC (freelance/gig work, rental income)  

  – 1099-K (payments from third-party processors like PayPal or CashApp)  

  – 1099-INT (interest income from banks, IRS,)  

  – 1099-DIV (dividends from investments)  

  – 1099-B (stock sales or investment income)  

  – 1099-G (unemployment compensation or state tax refunds)  

  – 1099-R (retirement income from pensions, IRAs, or annuities) 

  – SSA-1099 (Social Security benefits)  

– Alimony received (if applicable)  

 Deductions & Credits Documentation  

– Education Expenses  

  – 1098-T (tuition statement for higher education)  

  – 1098-E (student loan interest paid)  

– Health & Medical 

  – 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C (health insurance coverage statement) 

  – Records of medical expenses (if itemizing deductions)  

Homeownership & Rental 

  – 1098 Form (mortgage interest statement)  

  – Property tax statements  

  – Home office expenses (if self-employed)  

  – Rent paid (some states offer credits for renters)  

Charitable Donations 

  – Receipts or records of donations made to qualified charities  

Retirement Contributions 

  – Records of IRA contributions  

  – 401(k) or pension contributions not reported on W-2  

 Self-Employed / Business Owners  

– Income and expense records 

– Mileage logs for business travel  

– Home office expenses 

– Receipts for equipment or business-related purchases  

– 1099-K/1099-NEC/1099-MISC forms  

– Estimated tax payments made throughout the year  

 Investments & Other Financial Transactions  

– Cryptocurrency transactions (capital gains/losses)  

– Real estate income or rental property expenses  

– K-1 forms (if part of a partnership, S-corp, or trust)  

 State & Local Taxes  

– Records of estimated tax payments  

– Previous year’s state/local tax refund documents
